June 2023 Newsletter
We have just had the privilege and pleasure of hosting Master Coach, EMCC accredited coach supervisor and thought leader on Supervision Julia Carden, speaking about 'Supervision - developing self-awareness or self-delusion'.
Julia held a wonderfully reflective space where she supported us to think about coaching supervision, its purpose, how it can help us grow and develop as coaches and where we might be deluding ourselves in that development journey. We reflected on how supervision can be a space for us to 'dust off the coal dust', 'step up onto the balcony and reflect on the dance we do with our clients' and how it can be a 'sandpit in which to play' (Julia offered us lots of fantastic metaphors to get our creative juices flowing!) to get us thinking about what we take, and more importantly what we don't take to supervision - what are the 'uglies' we don't take and why don't we take them.
Some of the comments and questions during the session were about how much Julia made us think on the further questions we, as coaches, need to take away and think about/reflect on in order that we can be the best coaches for our clients.
What a wonderful session!
Here's what attendees had to say:
Thank you for today's inspiring and engaging workshop about the world of supervision. I felt like we had an expert tour of Supervison sprinkled with good reflection and experiential elements. Now I am more aware of the many facets and wonderful transformational opportunities available that we may all too often miss or not consider. Julia, expertly created a rich mix of educational information, reflection time and questions as well as group learning to provide a stimulating evening which I feel all the more enriched by. I now have a range of questions to bring to my next supervision plus more excitement and curiousity about future potential. Not bad for a Tuesday evening after a very long busy day. Thank you.

The LCG event, "Coaching Supervision - developing self-awareness or self-delusion", was both very informative and inspiring. The presenter, Julia Carden, facilitated the presentation and discussions exceptionally well, with helpful explanations about the purpose of coaching supervision. For myself, as a miner's granddaughter, I especially appreciated the metaphor of supervision as being "somewhere to wash off the coal dust" (the real coal mines having of course closed now!).
The break-out discussions were also very informative. It was a delight to learn from other coaches, and to hear their experiences of being both supervisors and working with a supervisor. The discussions about Group Supervision were especially helpful and thought-provoking, with some of the questions being, "what are the barriers to learning in a group?", and "what might we need to pay attention to?"
With much appreciation to our presenter Julia Carden, and to the LCG Chair Team for this excellent event. You have given us much to reflect on and inspire us, for our roles in Coaching Supervision. Thank you!
